Substitutes:

Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

High XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
Level 1+
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
Staff Pick
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.

It still works well; just tried it today.

Please note: DO NOT use a BEAST as your leveling pet; it won't survive if low level. (edited)

GCSuns

wrote on 2021-12-06 17:21:14

I changed the script so that Sprite Darter/Nether Faerie won't cast Evanescence during the round in which all Pounder's abilities are on CD (Turn 6 above). This is also a round with the Dragonkin buff so it is good to use Arcane Blast then.

ability(Evanescence:440) [enemy(#2).active & enemy.ability(Sandstorm:453).usable] (edited)

GCSuns

wrote on 2021-08-28 04:08:03

Happened to me too. Small thing, but maybe sending the Lv 1 out first then bringing in Zep is the workaround. Zep surely can survive the extra attack

Quintette

wrote on 2021-05-23 11:34:32

This used to be my favourite strategy for leveling a level 1 pet. Sadly, no longer. The leveling pet needs a certain amount of HP, otherwise it will not survive 2, let alone 3, of Pounder's Quakes.

Azclub#3703

wrote on 2020-11-11 14:47:21

Also works with Nether Faerie Dragon PB Breed

But need to update the script to use Moonfire again when the weather changed

change(#2) [self(#1).dead]
ability(Explode:282) [enemy(#3).hp<=618]
use(Moonfire:595) [!weather(Moonlight:596)]
ability(Moonfire:595) [round=2]

ability(Evanescence:440) [enemy(#2).active]
ability(Arcane Blast:421)
ability(Missile:777) [self.round=1]
ability(Decoy:334) [self(#2).active & enemy(#2).active]
ability(Missile:777)

Enzzo#1146

wrote on 2021-02-07 21:14:35

Did you test this? You want the weather to be sandstorm to reduce the amount of damage Pounder does with Quake. Otherwise your level pet could die in the back row.

Shywillow

wrote on 2020-11-11 22:32:37

strat works but need to use the script below to account for weather change,
and definitely dont use a level 1 pet it will die, more like level 6 - 7 (edited)

AaronMM

Eltana#1538

Sprite Darter died to rupture and couldn't remotely last long enough to even meet Mutilator.

Just a week ago this strat worked. I'm also having issues with other pet battles being more difficult than before. I wonder if they upped the difficulty for no reason. (edited)

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-08-11 10:12:23

Ì've seen SO many comments saying "This used to work, but now it doesn't" and "I wonder if they've made the battle harder". None of them have been right.

They have never made a battle harder. Rarely, changes in our pets abilities may mean that strats that used to work no longer do, like the late lamented HowlBomb or the upcoming Shattered Drfenses nerf, but never the battles themselves.

But most strats are vulnerable to crits or misses, and if there is a 1 in 400 chance that a strat will fail (like two crits in a row) people for whom it normally works start to think that something has changed with the battle itself, instead of realising they they have git rare, but possible, bad RNG that was there all along.

I'm not familiar with this strat, or perhaps it was just so long ago that I don't remember it, so I can't be specific, but if you think there's something wrong with the battle, or the strat, install Pet Battle Log Keeper addon and look over the battle when done, and look for unusual crits.

Munga

wrote on 2020-04-03 07:26:35

Strat works perfectly, just be careful when leveling a Lvl 1 beast pet, as one crit in the backline can kill it.

akesi#1338

wrote on 2020-03-16 17:14:30

I think the reason this strat might be failing for some people is because they're misreading it and casting moonlight to replace Pounder's sandstorm -- and it looks tempting, yes, but you need the sandstorm to mitigate the damage your backline pets are taking.

gbh102 wrote on 2019-08-08 11:03:14

This strat is rubbish, NOT working at all even WITH S/S Sprite Darter Hatchling (as this pet is available ONLY in S/S breed). Pity.... What worked PERFECTLY and was 100% reliable anytime I tried, was wowhead's Kalyn007 strat:
1. Syd the Squid - tidal wave x3 - bubble - tidal wave x8, after Syd dies swap to >>>
2. carry pet, swap to >>>
3. Chrominius - arcane explosion x3 - howl - arcane explosion - surge of power. Done ;)))

JestersTear

wrote on 2020-01-07 20:40:48

You're dead wrong. This strat has always worked. Before I quit, I ran this strat every single day without fail. I just did it again with no problem. Maybe you're missing a step of the strat and that's what's going wrong for you.

The only issue I have with the strat is the use of a Lvl 1+ pet to level. There are back row attacks that can kill most L1 pets.

Mearakona wrote on 2019-10-20 04:40:28

Did it with HB NFD easily, but i swapped flyby to missile on the zep. Worked way better

ZadTheGlad

wrote on 2019-09-13 18:23:55

As I'm still quite a novice in pet battling, I don't quite understand why this works for some and not for others. I switched to this strategy after several of the others failed time and again, and this is the only one that has not yet failed me, and was a lot quicker - fingers crossed after this so as not to jinx myself! XD

Malachi wrote on 2019-08-14 12:43:58

arcanebagel wrote on 2019-08-22 21:40:09

3clipse

wrote on 2019-07-28 06:38:29

Use Chi-Chi 2-1-1 Darkmoon Tonk 1-1 2 and Lvl Pet with enough HP to survive the quakes
Start with Leveller cast anything then bring in Chi-Chi
With Chi-Chi Use Ethereal to dodge the Whirlpool. Keep Tranquility up. Otherwise Alpha Strike. Chi-Chi will solo Crusher and Pounder and bring Mutilator to under 1K before dying. Ion cannon with Tonk.

Shenk

wrote on 2018-12-31 08:35:32

i wrote a script that allows you to bring any leveling pet, no matter what type or level it is
what it does: keep the sandstorm, so Quake will deal just 90 damage (135 to beasts) in total to your background pets

change(#2) [self(#1).dead]
ability(Explode:282) [enemy(#3).hp<=618]
ability(Moonfire:595) [round=2]
ability(Evanescence:440) [self.aura(Whirlpool:512).exists]

ability(Arcane Blast:421)

ability(Missile:777)

nomisuke

wrote on 2019-07-11 21:14:38

I love this strat except for the fact that it relies on 90% hit RNG. My luck is so crappy I had to restart the fight 5 times because I would miss during Sandstorm and my Nether Faerie Dragon would die before Pounder. I'm not kidding. Five times. It's also imperative to assign an S/S in your first slot.

Shenk

wrote on 2019-07-12 03:40:38

i'll review the fight to check the speed requirement. but about the miss chance...in my experience it can still work out even when the NFD misses against pounder.
but yeah, unfortunately there is rng in it

Shenk

wrote on 2019-07-25 04:54:44

sorry for the late respone, but i think i found the problem. the script used to cast evanescence only when the whirlpool was up and after that no longer. now it also will use it against pounder (not against the 3rd, we want the NFD to die here). this should compensate for sandstorm misses.

See Eekwibble's comment below.

You need an S/S Sprite Darter Hatchling or Nether Faerie Dragon. The SDH only comes as S/S, so that's fine, but when the Substitutes feature was introduced, no speed limit was put on the NFD, so (I imagine - haven't tried it) the Ethereal in Round 3 didn't have the intended effect for people not using S/S breeds.

This has now been fixed, and a speed limitation has been specified. Thanls, Remte!

I used a S/S Nether Faerie Dragon instead of Sprite Darter - worked fine

This strat predates the new and improved features such as the substitutions tab. If one of the admins could add a minimum speed requirement to the first pet, it should eliminate confusion about which NFD breeds work and which don't (an fyi to everyone in the meantime, though; only the S/S breed works).

This strategy with Sprite Darter Hatchling has worked well for me several times. Thanks, Xu-Fu!

neti1 wrote on 2019-02-13 18:00:09

This failed 3 out of 3 tries with a P/P NFD. It worked with an S/S. You may want to update the strategy to note that it is breed-dependent.

Even fewer conditionals. ;P

ability(Moonfire:595) [ !weather(Moonlight:596) ]
ability(Evanescence:440) [ round>2 & round<9 ]
ability(#2) [ enemy(#3).hp<619 ]
ability(#1)
change(#2)

For the life of me I can't figure out why this strat has Arc Blast before Moonfire, it doesn't need to be. Crusher doesn't change the weather.

This seems to not work with a PP Nether Fairie Dragon. The speed is too low and dodges don't work properly. It just ends up dying with Pounder still too alive.

swap in lvl pet on 3rd turn of pounder, he casts his aoe then, the dmg is unavoidable anyway

I made a TD Battle Script for this fight

if [enemy(Crusher:1009).active]
ability(#3) [enemy.round=2]
ability(#2) [enemy.round=3]
ability(#1)
endif

if [enemy(Pounder:1008).active]
ability(#2) [enemy.round=1]
ability(#3) [enemy.round=2]
ability(#1)
endif

if [enemy(Mutilator:1007).active & !self(#1).dead]
ability(#2) [enemy.round=2]
ability(#1)
endif

if [self(#1).dead & !self(#2).active]
change(#2)
endif

if [self(#2).active]
ability(#2) [enemy.hp<618]
ability(#1)
endif

This is the right strategy for this fight. Thank you for putting this script here. I should note that this script does not match the above strategy notes, and should probably replace or be its own.

-- If someone can explain why delay Moonfire to second round in the beginning instead of using it right away, please do.
-- Same lineup. Slightly shorter script. Added abilities' names for clarity. ~19 rounds on average.
-- Wastewalker Shu:215J:21152N:221CAJ:ZL:P:::::10:23.25:

ability(Evanescence:440) [self.aura(Whirlpool:512).exists]
ability(Evanescence:440) [enemy.aura(Spiked Skin:316).exists]

change(next) [self.dead]
if [enemy(Mutilator:1007).hp<=618]
ability(Explode:282)
standby
endif

ability(Moonfire:595) [!weather(Moonlight:596)]
ability(Thunderbolt:779)

I like where you were going with your script. You only ever need to tell it to change to pet #2 though. If the second pet dies your third pet is automatically put in play. Did not see your post before I put up the script I wrote. It should be noted that moonfire typically does the same damage as max power arcane blast.

TD Script

if [ enemy(#3).hp < 618 ]
ability(Explode:282)
standby
endif
ability(Evanescence:440) [ self.aura(Whirlpool:512).exists ]
ability(Evanescence:440) [ enemy.aura(Spiked Skin:316).exists ]
ability(#3) [ ! enemy.hp.full ]
ability(#1)
change(#2)

Unless your Sprite Darter Hatchling or Nether Faerie Dragon decide to Explode this script is going to be easier to read with fewer conditionals to interpret.

Note: Moonfire will be used on CD when the enemy isn't at full health.

Sopherra wrote on 2017-03-25 09:05:25

I tried using my Nether Faerie Dragon but couldn't get it to last long enough. Pulled in my Teroclaw Hatchling (2/2/2), used Nature's Ward in place of Moonfire and Dodge in place of Evanescence. When I got to Mutilator, and he got under 700 health, I passed until my hatchling died. For me, he was at 600, so I used explode right away.

Both my Sprite Darter and the Darkmoon Zeppelin died before Crusher. Not great.

Saintgabrial wrote on 2016-11-09 18:40:53

As a note, the guide says with any level 5+ pet for a leveling pet. but I found out that with Pounder and his Quake ability he kills any pet that is under 475 HP. My Razormaw Hatchling was level 6 and died. i used a [Beast Battle-Training Stone] to give him more hit points and he still died. Did it again so he was level 8 with 485 HP and he finally survived.

So instead of any level 5+ it should read any level pet with 485+ HP. Or to be safe 500+ HP.

Aranesh

I bumped the level up a bit. The page doesn't understand minimum HP (yet ^^). Thank you for the comment!

Plex wrote on 2016-09-10 23:15:45

Worked great, although this tactic never say when it's a good time to swap in your leveling pet.

Aranesh

wrote on 2016-09-10 23:53:36

You don't have to :-) Since it's the only pet that will survive, it will get the experience automatically

Malachi wrote on 2016-06-29 05:11:44

Good job XuFu (as usual)!

I would like to point out that the Darkmoon Zeppelin is almost not needed. Mutilator has few hit points left when the Zep comes in for most battles. A more advantageous strategy (IMO) would be to use the Zep's Decoy ability to allow a leveling pet to come out and get the 5000+ xp.

Aranesh

wrote on 2016-06-30 02:22:57

Hey Malachi!
Yeah the Dragonling is not heavily needed, but this strategy is a bit safer than swapping in a level pet. And if you use Explode in the end, the level pet will actually get the full experience :-)

Remte

wrote on 2016-01-24 03:01:14

Do you put a Sprite Darter Hatchling (not only here ^^) because of the single, fast breed or is it just because? You know, a Nether Faerie Dragon is way easier to get. ;-)

Aranesh

wrote on 2016-01-24 06:43:14

Here it is indeed because of the speed. On other places I already exchanged it, unless I missed one. Historically, I had the Sprite Darter before the Nether Faerie Dragon and never really understood how rare it is until I believe you pointed it out ^^

Jenn wrote on 2016-05-24 22:46:16

Just want to say that I used a Nether Faerie Dragon S/S and it did indeed work. Thank you so much for all your help!
