Substitutes:

Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

Breed
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
Level 1+
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

If you put Dibbler in slot 1 and use Toxic Smoke on round one and explode on round 2, in the 3rd round you win the fight already with an other exploding pet. No 4th round necessary. I would suggest the Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling. (edited)

use(Toxic Smoke:640) [ round = 1 ]
use(Explode:282)
change(Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling:844)

Weird note for this fight. It's probably mostly known that you can't complete both Rydyr and Andurs or the WQ goes away, but unlike most (all?) of the repeatable dailies this can't be completed if you don't have World Quests unlocked. Currently (10.0 Dragonflight Pre-patch) you need to be level 45 and speak with Khadgar to complete Uniting the Isles. There is a rep requirement but it's waived if you've done it on an alt.

As of 1 Aug 23 I couldn't win this battle without adding a fourth round. Works well with the above strategy, but with Dibbler using toxic smoke, drill charge and then explode. Great strategy, thank you.

I'm using Dibbler for 2nd pet, just explode

use(Explode:282)

Today I have found that this battle cannot be repeated, I have deactivated all the addons. Can't repeat this battle or is it my fault?

If you complete the quest by battling both Andurs AND Rydyr the quest completes and you can no longer repeat. Battle only Rydyr (the quicker of the two) to preserve repeats.

Pet bombling is a cheaper and similar replacement for Micro Defender. x22. 2>1>3.

Also, someone who is looking to level their character, 2 explodes (with the highest HP) and any third with mechanical ability, all 3 with 280+ speed is 20% quicker (28-30 seconds from start>finish>start vs 37 seconds with the lv1 strat of start>finish>start). Was able to get from 49>50 in 12 mins. (edited)

Clanking scrapsorter is capturable so getting three of them for toon leveling is easy for a fast 2nd slot pet. Several options for first slot can work. But the speed is only important for the 2nd pet to avoid Bjorns last turn. He heals himself if you hit him first anyway with the first pet.

JamesDunn wrote on 2021-02-11 08:58:05

Having 2nd pet's speed above 280 will be a bit faster (explode will go off before enemy's attack). (edited)

You can use Iron Starlette with 2 leveling pets just like the other guy. Wind Up, Toxic Smoke, Wind Up, Explode. Done.

(OP) Threewolves

wrote on 2020-08-08 06:12:24

This divides the XP between two pets. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But, not sure if all breeds of Iron Starlette work with the two leveling pets at Rydyr?

Nyari

Fight duration: ~30 seconds

Every (blue and 25) pet with Explosion works!

A very fast and reliable strategy.

(OP) Threewolves

wrote on 2019-05-21 11:45:49

Any (blue and 25) pet with Burst will work also.

Curiously, when set to any pet other than a spore with explode it does not list a spore as an explode alternative pet. I made sure Wildcard was selected for the two unused abilities. It should list at least 18 different alternates, I think. Anybody know why?

schlumpf#2707

wrote on 2019-04-30 04:15:07

I think we also keep the family the same , for +-dmg reasons. You may want to pick a second mechanical as those have more alternatives. Or clone the strat with a different secondary type?

Nyari

wrote on 2019-04-30 04:21:41

I recommend the Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling. It's a good and common pet.

(OP) Threewolves

wrote on 2019-04-30 04:23:23

I guess I'll just leave it as it is. I think it brings awareness to the fact that different pet families can share an ability like explode. I did change the "Bring in" line to "Any pet with Explode ability". So, I hope that helps people that may not have a spore... or three ;)

Nyari

wrote on 2019-04-30 04:31:24

It's your choice, but it will make fewer players aware of the strategy. If you look at alternatives, you will see a red border if you do not have the (rare and expensive) seaborne spore.

I think that's a pity, because it's a really great strategy and almost everyone has pets like the MPD, as it's often needed.

(OP) Threewolves

wrote on 2019-04-30 06:44:20

I switched it back to MPD. Thank you.

Nyari

That pleases me. I hope the strategy gets the attention it deserves :)

Remte

wrote on 2019-04-30 16:01:37

A far as the conversation goes, should you pick a spore for Explode, the crimson one will be the best :-)

(OP) Threewolves

wrote on 2019-04-30 16:44:05

I have 31 pets with the explode ability. Several are duplicates with only different breeds. Any of them will work. Now I'm leveling a 3rd Draenei Micro Defender to have 3 Power Leveling Teams when this is available during Bonus week. I'm partial to the Seaborne Spore though because it took so long for me to get it to drop. :) Also, the way to set Rematch to autoload healthiest pets is under the Options Tab/Team Options/Load Healthiest Pet and I also like to check "Allow Any Version" sub menu for this Power Leveling battle.
